A space station is constructed in the shape of a hollow ring ofmass 4.85 104 kg. Members of thecrew walk on a deck formed by the inner surface of the outercylindrical wall of the ring, withradius 145 m. At rest when constructed, the ring isset rotating about its axis so that the people inside experience aneffective free-fall acceleration equalto g. (Thefigure below shows the ring together with some other parts thatmake a negligible contribution to the total moment of inertia.) Therotation isachieved by firing two small rockets attachedtangentially to opposite points on the outside of the ring.
